Illex illecebrosus squid are caught in commercial quantities from the Maritime Provinces of Canada to North Carolina.
Our trawlers catch illex squid from late May through October. The average size of the illex squid increases as the season progresses. Normally, in any given catch the size difference between the smallest squid and the largest squid is only about 100 gms. Seafreeze usually has an annual production of 8,000 - 10,000 MT. The smaller squid in the beginning of the season are jumbled packed with only the top layer neatly arranged. The bigger sizes (medium and large) are hand laid throughout the block. Illex squid is not graded on board the trawlers.
The size grade of our illex squid landings are determined after we defrost a number of blocks from each day of the vessels production. We maintain sample reports for each lot of fish or squid produced on board our trawlers. |
